A native of Austin, Texas, Myrna Cabello was born to a Mexican immigrant family.
At an early age, Myrna realized that poverty, violence and cultural barriers
could be transcended through the magic of words. Writing about what she observed
in daily life became her retreat, her escape. She wrote award winning poems, short
stories, and speeches that captured the desperation of longing for a better life.
Myrna also noticed that she could hear music in her head accompanied by words
that stirred inside of her. Lacking the resources for an instrument, she came to
realize that she could record these songs and lyrics on a recorder and find
musicians to accompany her. Her true passion awoke. Myrna merges the sweet and
sour of love and hate, the traditions of English and Spanish and produces thought
provoking lyrics and melodies.
Despite her greatest fears she formed a band.... Myrna and the Gris Gris Blues
Band, based in Austin, Texas was formed in February 2005. Myrna writes what
inspires her at the moment so the music can best be described as a variety of
blues, rock, that at times borders on country and jazz with a splash of Latin
that spans the musical spectrum. Whether it’s the grooving Spanish song Un Dia,
the haunting melodies in Take Me To The River, or the rolling funk favorite You
Only Call Me When You're Drunk, Myrna’s all-original songs and engaging performances
are winning over fans throughout Central Texas. Her strong soulful delivery and
sassy bilingual styling accompanied by her "in your face" lyrics keep you at the
edge of your seat.
Wasting little time Myrna and the Gris Gris Blues band has notched several
accomplishments that include being featured as One of the Best Austin Artists
You’ve Never Heard Of (But Will) in the Austin American Statesman’s XLent in
December 2005. They have also been showcased at the Texas Music Museum, performed
with a number of renowned Latina musicians at the Las Comadres national convention,
performed at Bayfest in Corpus Christi and Pecan Street Festival. They have been
interviewed on KOOP radio Austin and KBSO Corpus Christi and performed live on
Channel 36 and Channel 8 News in Austin. This is why the city of Austin is
declaring it Myrna day on Thursday May 18th, 2006. So with Myrna Cabello leading
the way The Gris Gris Blues Band provides a sound that will fill the Austin nights
and keep its patrons under their spell.
MYRNA AND THE GRIS GRIS BLUES BAND has also performed at Victory Grill, Mother
Egan’s, The Iron Cactus, El Rincon, Nuevo Leon for the Cepeda Music Garden Benefit,
